Ever been in a cab and the driver is foreign, and he gets on the phone and starts talking, and it sounds like complete gibberish, not to mention they sound REALLY angry? This got me thinking, if Arabic sounds so weird to a non-speaker, what does English sound like to someone who speaks only Dutch or Gaelic or whatever?
Well, the first thing I noticed is that it seems like they talk really fast, which would not be suprising for English, unless it was a second language or something.
It could also be language reliant, maybe English sounds different than Portuguese to a non speaker of both. In one language it sounds fast and angry, and in the other slow and kind, maybe even polar opposites.
But what would it sound like? My friend suggested that it probably sounded like English, only with the letters in the words sorta mixed up. I also had the idea that maybe it sounds like a mix of THEIR native language and the foreign one. A great video example of this is by Brian and Karl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt4Dfa4fOEY
Another question: what does ANY language sound like to a different SPECIES? I would take the example from a species that might already have a language. Or what does it sound like to plants, or what does it sound like to aliens. Or what does it sound like to…
